TODAY'S ZAMAN
  • Dealing with prejudice
Sadly, prejudice and discrimination are still commonplace around the world.I was interested to hear a couple of friends from New Zealand share reflections about the experience of spending time with a group of fellow New Zealanders recently.

  • Erbakan's legacy and gas deal with Iran
I dined with late Necmettin Erbakan, former leader of the Felicity Party (SP) and father of political Islam in Turkey, in his private residence in the Balgat district of Ankara, only two months before he passed away on Feb. 27 at the age of 84. We had a long conversation about many issues, on which he could shed much light, since he was privy to classified information and confidential documents. He had a stack of books piled up on the right corner of the long dining table, all marked with brightly colored stickers on different pages. They were about global Jewish conspiracy theories with some clearly anti-Semitic subjects. He talked at length about the so-called “The Committee of 300,” which some allege is a Jewish-run international council which helps shape politics, commerce, banking, media, and the military for centralized global efforts.

  • Implications of Murat Özçelik’s resignation
Ambassador Murat Özçelik, undersecretary of Public Order and Security, an institution that was established to coordinate the fight against terror, has resigned from his position.

  • Factory settings
If we were to give a title to an article discussing the problems most heatedly debated in Turkey, I think the best option would be “Woes of transitioning from an empire to a nation-state.”

  • May 19
Today’s date inevitably inspires a column about different aspects of contemporary Turkey.

  • Are there a few Hizmet(s)?
When we look at the recent discussions and debates surrounding the Hizmet (Gülen) movement especially in the Turkish media, I observe that some writers are inclined to see the movement composed of a few relatively autonomous groups with sometimes clashing visions and practices.

  • May 19, 2012, rings in new era, almost
Today is an important day in Turkey. Not only is it once more May 19 -- the day the country jointly commemorates Mustafa Kemal Atatürk as well as celebrates Youth and Sports Day, the latter having been established by the founder of the modern Republic of Turkey himself -- but if all goes according to plan it heralds a new era with regard to how national holidays are going to be organized in the future, too.

  • Illuminating Uludere
The Uludere disaster of December 28 last year, in which 35 citizens lost their lives, shocked the nation. It is an absolute tragedy.

  • Uludere incident becomes even more controversial
The Uludere incident, in which a military air strike killed 34 smugglers, claiming that it mistook them for terrorist Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) members in Şırnak’s Uludere district, is five months old now.
